So who is this White guy, you ask? Well, (by now everyone knows that) he's German who, while pursuing his doctorate thesis, eventually found himself studying the music and culture of the Caribbean.
His interest in the Caribbean dates back to 1970, when be discovered Dub and what he calls the poetry connected with Dub. Professionally, he became interested when he did extensive research into Jamaican dance, poetry, religion and the Rastafarian movement.
Chako made regular trips to the region, but only became aware of Trinidad and Tobago when he met Brother Resistance while working in London in 1984.
When he finally did visit our twinisle Republic, he was so awe-struck, he decided to include Rapso and general Trini culture in his thesis. After that first visit to our slice of paradise, Dr. Chako has made journeys to Carnival a mainstay in his yearly activities. His involvement has become so intense, he is now very familiar with what we Trinis take for granted at times - "we tang" - in other words our lifestyle, vernacular, superstitions, beliefs and history.
So how did the Chakman get into singing kaisos?
Well, performing was nothing new to him since he is a cabaret performer by profession and being so interested in our culture, perfoming calypso seemed the next logical step in totally experiencing what it is to be Trini.
Urged on by his lovely wife (turned "wines girl"), Tina and his close friend Che Rodriguez, the 31-year-old Chakster, composed “Trini Just Like You" a calypso about the experiences of a (White) tourist to visiting this country.
After two years of work on the satirical ditty, he approached Kisskidee and after an audition, was included in the Kisskidee Karavan line-up.
And we all know the outcome of his performance, as he rocked the National Stadium and the Arima Veledmme and had the crowds calling for more "whitey". It seems the sky is the limit for this German kaiso kid and who knows, one day, he might even be as big as Superblue.
